Story behind the song
Indian legend from Salado, TX. I wrote the lyrics about 20-25 years ago, and I put music to them in Nov 2020.
Lyrics
Sirena sat and sighed each night next to Salado Creek; she sang a song with her soft voice while tears hummed on her cheek: "O my Indian brave looks away whenever I walk by. I would be his young, happy wife if I could catch his eyes." The stars in chorus with the moon kept harmony with her while a cunning, magic catfish made a deal as he purred: "I will offer you your one wish to lure this handsome man, if you, in turn, will pay my fee. Now listen to my plan: "You'll spend each full moon night with me as a mermaid, my sweet, but if you ever break your vow Forever we shall meet. "There's one more thing you cant allow as a mermaid, my sweet, if ever seen by human eyes Forever we shall meet." She made her promise to the fish and then he cast the spell. Tomorrow she would win her brave but lose herself as well. Sirena could not sleep that night after making her wish; instead of dreaming of her brave, she thought about that fish. She knew she had to stop the spell before the day began. She wanted love to be her own without the fish's plan. Waking early, she left her bed and met with a surprise: instead of cancelling her vow, she caught her brave's brown eyes. The brave stood as still as a stone and then came to her side. He said she had a magic glow, one that would suit a bride. With hard-skinned hands he touched her back while speaking gentle words. Sirena soared above the clouds and looked down at the birds. They married under a full moon, which let the stars shine bright, and she almost forgot her vow made on that desperate night. She thought about her pact each day until that first full moon; within its soft glow she then transformed to a mermaid's costume. Her blood ran cold, her green eyes dimmed, two legs became one tail. Her hair like moss hung past her hips, deep suntanned skin turned pale. With the catfish, she swam down deep to the dark water's floor. His muddy whiskers stroked her cheeks, her heart felt warmth no more. His unblinking eyes stared with greed at his prize where it lay. He tried to press his lips to hers and then she swam away. She quickly lost him with her speed, but when she turned to look, she felt a sharp tug at her fin. It was pierced by a hook. Casting herself upon a rock, examining her plight, Sirena struggled with the barb that had hindered her flight. The wind blew through her wet, black hair under the moon-filled sky. She looked around to find some help and caught her husband's eye. She started to sing out his name when she recalled her vow. A mermaid she would always be. She knew she was doomed now. Her blood ran cold, her green eyes dropped, one tail forgot two feet. The promise echoed from the creek: Forever we shall meet. Forever we shall meet.
