Story behind the song
Memories Made, Times Forgotten is one of my favorite songs. It has a powerful sound to it that is very moving. Its a song about the loneliness in losing what you had, whether its a friend, a girlfriend, or whatever. Its about relationships and how one day that person is the biggest part of your life, and the next they could be gone and have forgotten you and the times you both shared. Its a sad concept, but its something that every person goes through. Whether you get into a fight, or just end up outgrowing each other, were always leaving our pasts behind and forgotten.
This was one of the songs that just seemed to flow as I was writing it. There were no long gaps of frustrating mind blocks or anything like that. It was basically all written during the morning of April 12, 2000. I wrote the first two verses in the first 7 minutes, and then decided to get ready for my day. In the shower while the tune was playing in my head, lyrics just started coming to me. If Im not sitting with a pen in my hand and I do happen to get an idea, its usually not more than one line. But this time, I thought of lines - the chorus, the third verse, and part of the fourth. Worried Id forget what I just thought of, I started to etch the words in the fog-stained glass of the shower door. As the words started to run, and new fog replaced the old like a metaphor of life, I hurried my shower so I could permanently affix the new words to paper before they were forever disappeared and forgotten.
The repetitive part at the end of the song - "we read the words and turn the page" - didnt come till a few days later on April 16th. I wasnt originally going to have that part there, but the more I thought of it, the more I liked it. I wanted to outline and emphasize the whole theme of the song in one line. Its basically saying that life is like a book, and we read the words of it and turn the page without too much thought. Theres one line in that repetition that says, "I read the words and I lose my place." I am basically saying that Im the kind of person that likes to hold on to the past. I want to go back and read the words again, but I am forced to move on.
Before the title Memories Made, Times Forgotten was the title of our album, it was just the title of this song. Mario and I were thinking of song titles, and after a little bit of thought, that just came to us. And after a little more thought, we realized that not only was it a really cool title for this one song, but it basically described the theme of the entire album.
Drowning Fish has been a long time in the making. A lot has changed and many memories made since the early days, since the day we began. The music was created and the words written and songs played at many different stages of our personal lives, and during almost every stage of our bands life. This CD is a reflection of the times, and the way we lived them. Its about our troubles, and the fun we had along the way. Its about youth, love, and growing up. Its about memories that were made, and times that became forgotten. Memories Made, Times Forgotten. Its the story of one boy, and the tale he tells on life. -Marc Morcos
Lyrics
Outside children play
Laughter fills the air
And I miss you
The memories will fade
The times we shared, erased
I'll miss you
And now
I'm gone
And you
Moved on
What we
Once shared
You'll soon
Forget
They say time heals all pain
But time tears me further away
From where my heart is
Is the loneliness a phase
Will it someday be okay
Or always remain
And now
I'm gone
And you
Moved on
What we
Once shared
You'll soon
Forget
We read the words and turn the page
We read the words and turn the page
We read the words and turn the page
We read the words and turn the page
I read the words and I lose my place
We read the words and turn the page
