Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
This was written on a Hurtigruten in Arctic Norway, running for shelter of a Fjord from the open sea during a storm. It turned into an allegory for childhood protection versus adult adventure in a dangerous world.

The rock of ages Tries to stall but what the blazesSleek and stark allure. Protected watersTake a life of pleasure, comfort and ease Protected watersTake the time for leisure, your softer self appease Protected waters Protected waters Cosy and appealing but uneventful too Protected waters Safe but walls and ceiling make a prison cell for you Protected waters Fear not the your life is gentle, Fear not your life is mild But don't get too experimental with your ambition child Beyond our streets there's chaos reigning, better kept at bay The coward bleats: But tired of feigning, Strange conceits all appertaining Rise defeating thoughts constraining, Bravely holding sway Protected watersA place for childhood innocence a place to learn and thrive Protected watersA base to build your confidence before you try to fly Protected watersAnd rail against the notion that you're tethered to the floor Or sail the mighty ocean as the Vikings did beforeProtected waters
