Urban lyricism meets soulful singing over funky beats
Born in New York City and raised on the California Coast, Steph Stolorow aka BubLRap has a background as diverse as her musical style. The daughter of a Chinese-American mother and Russian-American father, she continues to discover the intricacies of what this looks like in our society and touches on these and other issues, such as good ol' love, through her songwriting. Drawing upon her instrumental and record-mixing abilities, in 2004 (after ditching grad school to pursue music) Steph started composing several self-produced tracks that started a little buzz in the Bay Area and beyond. Steph was awarded 2nd Prize in the 2004 Soul-Making Literary Contest for songwriting (nationwide), and she was named a 2005 Blue Bear School of Music (SF) scholarship winner. In early 2005 Steph joined forces with three others, forming the SF-based rock-soul band, Phonofly, consisting of Steph’s vocals, Doug Major on guitar, Justin Miller on bass, and Jayme Arredondo on drums. Phonofly's intoxicating mix of rock, soul and reggae, in a sense reflective of the colorful mix of styles in their Bay Area home-base, uplifts live listeners and can be heard on their debut album, "What You Seek." BubLRap music has received radio play on KCRW in Los Angeles, ImaginAsian radio based in NYC, and Enemy Combatant Radio in SF, and press coverage in SF Weekly and the East Bay Express. Most recent local venues include the Red Devil Lounge, the Elbo Room, and the Shattuck Down Low.
