Story behind the song
I was driving home from the after hours club and I saw a waitress from my earlier gig. I had given her a ride home before (and found out she had small, unattended children waiting) and I decided I was enabling her by driving her home. She was a mess, she played the bar game too long and had no way out. I drove right past her.
Lyrics
Tammy's hitching a ride again She's run out of money She's run out of friends And she's walking the solitude The highway seems like a river of dreams Rolling on to meet the sky It's so hard to face them all And watch them pass you by And she's walking the solitude Drowning in a sea of strangers Paul's day ends at the bottle club He just likes to sit and brood Drowning in a sea of strangers Lost in his solitude Dressed in see-through born-to-lose He's waiting for his life to come around Sorting through the broken pieces He's getting tired of the sound And he's walking the solitude drowning in a sea of strangers Walking the solitude Walking the solitude We all want the world to come our way Hand in hand we go our seperate ways Our seperate ways And we're walking the solitude drowning in a sea of strangers, strangers Walking the solitude Walking the solitude
