Story behind the song
Written after being among the guests of honour at the celebrations in the Peace Field at Leh honouring the birthday of His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet. All the hopes and dreams of the Tibetan exile and refugee community seemed to flutter in the breeze on the snow lion flag. "Tashi delek" is an all purpose greeting. You can just hear the chant of "om mane pedme om" at the end of the song. Ann Ruscillo did a brilliant job improvising an oboe on the first and only take. Thank you, Ann. Since writing this song I have met the Dalai Lama twice but I never dared asked him if he'd heard it.Recorded in the International Year of Tibet. Produced by Bill Sherman, branchredd. If you like the song read up on the subject and do whatever you can for these beautiful people.
Lyrics
Sooner or later Tibet will be free And all of her people will be there in Lhasa Around the Potala when the Dalai Lama returns. There will be percha and there will be chang And, sooner or later, a "Nobel Toyang" Will ring in the air there on the roof of the world. When we were the guests at the birthday of His Holiness The national flag of Tibet hung proudly and free And all of the karma that led to us all being there Clung to the flag as it hung there and swung in the breeze In Free Tibet, broken moon of Ladakh, Free Tibet, there by the side of a road little more than a dirt track. But there's nothing on earth more powerful than an idea And one day you'll drive up that highway and straight through the frontier, For love and compassion and kindness will win in the end, They're stronger than whatever force they might come up against. Free Tibet, Can't you imagine the tears of Joy will be shed? Free Tibet, there with the flag with the snow lion rearing its head. Om mane padme om Om mane padme om...
