History of a relationship front to back with rhythmic patterns to complement the his/her narrative
singer/songwriter, sax player and sound engineer, I have created multiple CD's in my home studio using pro-tools and plug ins.
Story behind the song
After viewing a powerful theatrical play "The Last 5 Years", with it's story being told coming from opposite directions, I penned the lyrics and then structured the music to follow the themes only with different chord voicing - with their manner of speaking becoming intertwined and then adopting each other's words and desires. The irony, of course, is that they both thought they knew both themselves and each other, only to discover that a relationship is an ever changing playing field.
Lyrics
She'd been waiting all her days
to come alive like a new spring.
Kept her dreams inside a tattered box
secured with a bow of string.
All she wanted was someone
to read the manuscript of her life
see between the lines and understand her words.
He thought he'd learned the rules of life,
had a linguist's point of view
but the words and language of a woman's heart
was something totally new
All he wanted was someone
to share his point of view
to read his lines and understand his words.
From the start it was kismet
two souls in harmony
He knew her thoughts, there was no need for words
From the start he knew
the symbiosis was clear to see
they were sharing each other's words so easily.
Did the words change their meaning
or did they both stop listening?
Now all that's left behind are remnants of broken dreams
She thought he was selfish
He thought she was needy
Words, just words, that's all
5 Years gone
what did she know
5 years gone
where did they go
she thought that he would understand
she dreamed of forever land
now all his words don't mean a thing
5 years gone
she said she'd always love him
5 years gone
he said he'd never hurt her
how could they know they were only speaking words.
All she wanted was someone
to share her point of view
see between the lines and understand her words.
All he wanted was someone
to read the manuscript of his life
to read his lines and understand his words
