This song was written back in 1972. Brian Hill was my drummer at the time, and he entered his horse Big Red (Red Mambo Junior) in many competitions and they won many awards and citations. The song tells most of the story.

Story behind the song
The story behind this song, tells of a young lad who desired to ride and train this horse, Big Red. Because of Brian's determination and the love he had for the horse, and the horse's love for the rider. They were together in all they did. It is a true story of a horse and his rider who finished FIRST many times.
Lyrics
RIDIN' THE RANGE
FOURTEEN YEARS AGO
A QUARTER HORSE WAS BORN
'RED MAMBO JUNIOR' HE WAS NAMED
HEAD STRONG AND HANDSOME
A GIANT OF A HORSE
BUT TO ME HE WAS ALWAYS BIG RED
I WAS TWELVE AT THE TIME
KIND OF SMALL FOR MY AGE
AND THERE STOOD THE HORSE
I WAS TO TRAIN
BUT IT DIDN'T TAKE ME LONG
TO SADDLE THIS YOUNG BRONC
HE UNDERSTOOD
EV'RY MOVE THAT I MADE
I'LL BE RIDIN' THE RANGE
WITH BIG RED
GUIDIN' THE REINS
'ROUND HIS HEAD
HE'LL LISTEN TO ME
'CAUSE WE'RE BOTH FANCY-FREE
RIDIN' THE RANGE WITH BIG RED
I JUMPED IN THE SADDLE
AND UP ON HIS BACK
I RODE HIM AS BEST I COULD
HE BUCKED AND HE REARED
AND I BOBBED UP AND DOWN
BUT I STAYED IN THE SADDLE
UNTIL DARK
DAD COULD SEE
WE WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER
AND A SHOW HORSE
BIG RED WAS GOING TO BE
BIG RED HAS A STEP
SO GRACEFUL AND SMART
IT WOULD EVEN PUT TRIGGER
TO SHAME
I'LL BE RIDIN' THE RANGE
WITH BIG RED
GUIDIN' THE REINS
'ROUND HIS HEAD
HE'LL LISTEN TO ME
'CAUSE WE'RE BOTH FANCY-FREE
RIDIN' THE RANGE WITH BIG RED
NOW HE WAS READY
SO WE ENTERED HIM IN
HIS FIRST COMPETITION
WAS IN THE BAG
WE DIDN'T EVEN WORRY
HE WAS ALWAYS GREAT
HE CAME HOME WITH HONOURS
AND A RIBBON TO BOOT
THE REST OF THE STORY
IS WRITTEN ON THE WALLS
YOU'LL FIND TROPHIES
AND RIBBONS HE HAS WON
AND I'LL KEEP ON RIDIN' HIM
THERE'S NO SETTING SUN
IT'S JUST ME AND BIG RED
THAT'S ALL
I'LL BE RIDIN' THE RANGE
WITH BIG RED
GUIDIN' THE REINS
'ROUND HIS HEAD
HE'LL LISTEN TO ME
'CAUSE WE'RE BOTH FANCY-FREE
RIDIN' THE RANGE WITH BIG RED

In the fondest memories of BIG RED
(Red Mambo Jr) this song is dedicated,
also to Fred and Ruby Hill, the owners,
and Brian Hill, the rider and the trainer
of Big Red who gave me the inspiration,
and much info to write this story in song.
