Story behind the song
when I saw the movie Heathers, I was fascinated that there were twin scenes in which one of the main characters lit their cigarette from the result of something self-destructive the other did. the phrase "light my cigarette on your destruction" came to me and I instantly wrote it down. the rest of the song became a loose narrative from the perspective of Veronica, not really a retelling of the movie's plot, more like a song that Ronnie might write, and "Heathers" became the 5th song of the Fall Suite.
the intro was an instrumental we were working on that didn't really have an ending and didn't really go anywhere, and we noticed the rhythm and tempo was close to Heathers, so we turned it into an intro. if the band had stayed together we were going to re-record "Heathers" on its own
Lyrics
light my cigarette on your destruction
"don't do it"'s become nothing more than a slogan
I killed with you, helped you cover it up
extremism works, but it's never enough
my hand got burned, yours got shot
the red ribbon in my hair means a lot
I ain't goin' to Hell with you
disappear on my cue
it ain't over till the fat lady wheels
I could never understand your deals
flaked out on me before the prom
remember you by the scar on my palm
