JUNE 24, 2016 (EDINBURGH)
An Edinburgh resident of Nigerian parentage who was told by doctors in 2013 that he may never talk properly and certainly never sing properly again has recorded and released a 8 track gospel music album in which he sings the lead vocals in all his 8 tracks.
Performing under the artiste name TonyB, the man Mr Anthony Obi was diagnosed with recurring polyps in his throat in 2013 by doctors and told that his then fledgling efforts to pursue a career as a pop music singer will not take off as it could not be medically guaranteed that he could regain his normal singing voice due to the condition. He had surgery twice to remove the polyps, but his voice remained terribly hoarse and croaky.
Distraught at receiving this bad news, TonyB resorted to spiritual faith healing. According to him:
“One thing I did after hearing this news was to get the treatment that I desired which included surgeries (twice). I was told by my doctor after the second surgery, that they had done what was humanly possible about the polyps in my vocal cords … still; I couldn’t speak properly or sing. I was left with the possibility of living a life of managing that as ‘my’ medical condition with therapy. Realizing that I could no longer do it on my own, I got down on my knees, roll on the floor and cry out to God almighty. I prayed that God may fulfill the promise of Jesus Christ in me and restore my voice. I promised that in return I shall use that restored voice to sing His praises and spread His message of love and grace to the whole world. The polyp came out on its own 3 days later, and I started singing and talking naturally! Some may describe that as lucky, or in any other way, but I am witness to recovery by means which go well beyond the limits of medical knowledge. I tell you, that’s my story in a nutshell. It couldn’t have happened otherwise ”
His development as a gospel music evangelist has been observed and acknowledged by Skyler Jett the former vocalist and front man of American legendary group Commodores who met and jammed with TonyB in the Edinburgh studios where Tony was recording this his debut album. The album was produced by ace producer Iain Mckinna in his Edinburgh studios (www.offbeat.co.uk). A Soul flavoured world music genre that would trap the attention of gospel music lovers for it’s deep soothing lyrics, and also general popular music lovers for the sheer distinction and strength of the melody and Rhythm.
