Story behind the song
*WARNING*
If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you.
Or both can exist. It’s all really subjective. Proceed with understanding.
Thank you,

The Official Backstory
Darren Whitty wrote this song. I’ve asked him permission to cover it, registered it with my publisher as a cover license, and ensured that he sign up on SOCAN so that if any royalties were to ever exist from this recording, he would receive some money.
I have done this for “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns ‘N’ Roses, “Pigs In Submarines” by The Lesbians, and for the co-authorship in “The Song”. It will likely never come to anything, but I like knowing I kept things honest.
Darren played this song for me in his living room in Halifax in August, 2006 – about half of a month before my daughter’s first birthday. I immediately thought it was one of his best songs. Darren writes a LOT of good songs. He should be recognized for that.
This is my interpretation of his artwork.

Stay Dry

(Recorded on December 13, 2015)
I woke up this morning
To dawn's pale light
I'd been tossing & turning
All through the night
I rolled out of bed
& thought I might
Light me up a cigarette
To make me feel alright
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry
When the rain is coming down
Falling from all sides
I've seen sunny days
I've never asked why
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry, that's right
I looked out the window
And I sighed
The rain was pouring down
Painting the outside
My head was light
My chest felt tight
What a perfect day to curl up and hide
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry
When the rain is pouring down
Coming from all sides
I've seen sunny days
I've never asked why
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry, that's right
So many memories
And they all tried
To get the full attention
Of my third eye
Some memories are true
Others just lies
I used to be able to separate
Now I don't even try
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry
When the rain is pouring down
Painting the outside
I've seen sunny days
I've never asked why
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry
When the rain is coming down
Falling from all sides
I've seen sunny days
I've never asked why
It's getting harder and harder
Harder to stay dry, that's right
