inspired by the "novel" Half-Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls
Story behind the song
I had to read the book in order to teach it, so I made this song and borrowed a banjo....
Lyrics
Think like a horse
Learn how to fall
Let yourself roll off,
Yeehaw! Keep rolling, that’s all.
Grew up in a dugout, rattlers on the table.
Fighting floods and fever, I was young and able.
Mama was a lady, dainty and refined.
Daddy taught the basics, made me use my mind.
He said: God’s dealing everyone a different hand.
That’s what smart girls understand!
I took to training horses, they’d usually give in.
Sometimes I would fall off, get bruises, scratch my skin.
Daddy set the bone, when I had broken my arm.
“Never blame the horse,” he said. “He doesn’t mean you any harm.”
Dad was a philosopher and never gave us toys.
I got hurt playing baseball with the boys.
Think like a horse
Learn how to fall
Let yourself roll off,
Yeehaw keep rolling, that’s all.
Bridge:
Everything has got its purpose, if it fails, it wastes your time.
That’s what Daddy said back in those childhood days of mine.
See the sunrise, Mama said, and recognise God’s love.
And Daddy said “Tornadoes are a sure sign of God’s wrath.
