It's my own personal belief that the tv-show "lost" came from a bet. I can see the guy drunk, probably celebrating a recent success, ranting to his just-as-drunk writer friend.
"suspense is completely unrelated to logic, if you want to keep things interesting you have no need for them to make sense. You could write a whole show with just cliffhangers."
