Prose in Rosette

Prose in Rosette is a solo alternative electronic music project created by Douglas Jay Hertel.

Welcome to my page. My name is Douglas Hertel, and for the better part I am the creator and performer known as Prose in Rosette. My project has been around ever since I first learned some basic principles of recording and layering real audio sounds, and more to the point when I learned how to use Pro Tools. This was back in 2004 while I was taking some Music Theory as well as Music Production courses at a community college. At an early age, Fifth Grade to be exact, I picked up my first electric guitar, with the help of my parents of course. They were kind enough to even put me through a good 3 years of guitar lessons at a nearby shop. This is where I learned to read guitar tabs and spent some time learning how to play some tunes of the day. This was early-mid 90's...I can remember the rhythms of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" being an obstacle, but I jammed on quite a bit of Green Day, Blink 182, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins to name a few. I hold these days dear because I certainly owe a lot of my technique, feel and comfortable approach of today to my early phases within the learning process. By the time I reached high school I was eager and ready to play in a rock band. Which I did, the band consisted of a few of my good friends, and for the most part was a Saves the Day cover band. I think we played every track off of their album Through Being Cool at a point in time. We did explore a little into songwriting, but without a lot of musical composition and theory knowledge on my part, most of the tunes were limited melody and power chords. Pop Punk was quite the genre and trend at our school so we were riding the wave so to speak but really became performers as much as musicians. When I left High School to head to College, I took a new more mature approach to my music playing. The summer after High School was the first time I explored recording a song I wrote on my own. With the help of my friend who was the singer of our band, we worked on an original EP that was acoustic focused. We explored some multi tracking techniques to enhance our sound, and I was fascinated enough to dedicate some time to learning the process of recording real audio. I then took my first music production class "Introduction to Pro Tools" which was quite the class to inspire my interest. Once I got my feet wet in what still is a remarkable program I realized a missing piece to the equation which mostly centered around my inability to play piano and keyboards. I took a few piano instruction courses alongside 4 levels of music theory and came out to where I am today, constantly exploring, listening and learning techniques, styles, and sounds to constantly stay on my toes and hope to progress constantly. What I've learned the most in my experience and background is the boundaries are never absolutely limited, and within my creative endeavors optimism and open mindedness are key necessary attributes within the search for inspiration.
