Story behind the song
A remix of my 2009 recording, special thanks to Danna Moore for joining me on harmony vocals. I wanted to remix this track to commemorate the final Grateful Dead concerts Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead" at Chicagos Soldier Field on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2015. "Friend of the Devil" Hunter/Garcia/Dawson Released November 1970 on the Grateful Dead album "American Beauty". lyrics by; Robert Hunter, the only official member of the Grateful Dead that never performed onstage with the band. Robert Hunter wrote lyrics for many Grateful Dead songs. Music by; Jerry Garcia & The Grateful Dead with John Dawson & The New Riders of the Purple Sage. List of all instruments I'm playing in this mix; Vocals; Sterling Audio ST55 condenser Mic. Drums; my old Yamaha DD55 pads & drumsticks. I'm using my Carvin LB20 for bass, & my new SH65B guitar synth for all the rest.
Lyrics
I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didn't get to sleep last night, till the morning came around. Set out running, but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills. Set out running but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air. Set out running but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first ones named sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail, And if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail. Got a wife in Chino, babe, and one in Cherokee The first one says she's got my child, but it don't look like me. Set out running but I take my time, A friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Robert Hunter

Excellent cover of a classic. Really nice to hear you sing Michael. Sounds like you had a lot of fun with the SH65B guitar synth, very nice bass and drum work too. :) Excellent performance and production.

Very cool Michael and Danna. It's the second time I've heard your voice/singing Michael and it's very good!. This track captures the Dead's musicality very well I think - a 'Dead Head' eh? Very sweet. The Maestro revealing yet another side of himself - too cool.
