Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Quite a bleak song this - about being trapped in an insane world, being driven right to the edge, and then looking over that edge. The song was a project that I shelved about 5 years ago, but when Clickers Club announced a challenge on the theme of "the Sea" I knew it was time to dust it off and get it finished. Many thanks to Rodrica and Carlo for putting on these challenges - spurring us on to create stuff.
Lyrics
Many a true word is spoken in jest A man goes to hell to have his demons laid to rest But there's a price to pay The fuse burns shorter every day And you just know how the emperor will be dressed And I don't know how this relationship survives My back is scarred from one too many knives As we pitch headlong We never ask the question How did we end up living these lives? And the ocean calls my name And the waves sing to me "Come down and join us" they are saying "We are content and we are free"

Seagulls... :) Years ago I was bullied by several seagulls to turn over my cinnamon churro at Seaworld San Diego... killer prog here Steve! Love those rockin' guitars - awesome tone! Great vocals for this genre - a fantastic production!

Love that intro Steve! The guitar work on this track is awesome! I banged my head on my desk rockin' to it - ouch! Great vocals and lyrics as well. I liked how you wove the gulls into the track. Just an awesome rocker!

A very edgy start. Soon Rock is coming in with electric guitars. Lyrics are telling about demons and other dangers of the sea. Life and death. In between I hear some sea-gulls. A kind of horror, getting worse. Nice guitar solo around 3:50. Yes there are a lot of ways to look to the subject sea and seas can become really dangerous. I enjoyed this Rock piece. Could be a soundtrack for a "sea-thriller".

Edgy, Impactfull, Oblique, slapping on the face.......the combination lyrics and song is superb!! Steve you produced a fantastic song here!!! I never miss to check the lyrics ( when provided ) to understand more about the "behind the song". So I did it with your "The Call Of The Sea", and I repeat, Steve you are great!!! The main guitar riffs are so grinding, drums & bass with a fantstic sound. What a change at about 1:10, and later at 1:40 surprise after surprise. Vocals slightly halting the vamp ( sounding kinda indifferent or not worrying about -imho- ) this is "performance style" my friend! The guitar lead with the same "timbre" and edgy like the vocals imho, cutting the air around: superior!! I liked this one, so original, and absolutely the most impressing song for me of the yesterday´s challenge!

Excellently crafted tune. Top notch, mate. Love the hammondy grooving. Songs like this deserve wider attention. Edit: Read up on the lyrics and yea, much darker than I first thought. Nice. :)

From the intro with the great effect to the half spoken vocals and the Pete Townshend-like guitar breaks, this is another gem from the Smivets' layer. Great guitar work and super build up of a great rock song. The lyrics are deep, dark and mysterious - just like the deep dark sea. Great job, once again, Steve!
Trust the Smivets to come at a challenge from a unique angle. Love it! Bits of darkness sprinkled throughout give it a great edge, such as the tritone bits for the guitar solos.

Brilliant lyrics...really like those, clever stuff. Nice loud in-your-face track, great sound. Excellent vocal delivery, perfect for the content of the song. I like the seagull sounds in there...how did you get them to collaborate with you? I guess you lured them with a few McDonalds. Another definite hit.
