The Mountain and the Hummingbird
About my thinking that a mountain and a hummingbird have a lot in common in that I can't get my head around either of them and when near either one I just can't get enough of them.
acoustic guitar
I'm a folky acoustic guitar player/singer. I thought this might be a good place to make some of my music available on the web.
Story behind the song
I've been wanting to write some more happy songs - well, at least not sad and depressing - and this idea is one that has been in my head for many years and I thought I'd try to express it in a song. The lyrics came out as a kind of complicated poem and I wasn't at all sure I could write music to it. But with a bit of woodshedding the music came in one evening. (between about 10:00 and 1:00 am)
Lyrics
The mountain and the hummingbird
both are wonders true
They entrance, they grab your soul
and captivate so you
can’t take your eyes away I’ve found
I cannot get my head around
wonder and mystery surround
I can never ever get enough
Infinite weight of rocky mass
the depth and number far surpass
any tool I have to measure
never can you own the treasure
simply gawk and soak it in
upwelling feelings from within
overflow wondrous rich stuff
I can never ever get enough
CHOR:
The mountain and the hummingbird
are so alike, well that's absurd
get your head around it if you dare to try
The mountain and the hummingbird
I know I'll never find the words
to fit it all into my rhyme
for they are so sublime
Shimmer iridescent feather
darting, stopping, dipping whether
my slow eyes keep up or not
the brilliant little flying dot
dazzle, hover, almost see
but then it’s gone to hide away
and take with it my breath I say
I can never ever get enough
Chor
Her character is solid rock
as staid as any mountain
Her beauty is a visual spring
refreshing as the fountain
of living color on the wing
Delicate yes, and enchanting
exquisite it leaves me panting
I can never ever get enough
Chor
