Story behind the song
All of the verses are derived from the stories of people I've known. I first wrote the music in 1978 and always loved it but was never happy with my early lyrics. At first it was a dark epic entitled "Prerogative Unto Death" - way too bitter but not surprising with what I had been through at that time. Then in the mid 80's I softened it to "Toll Out the Bell" and sang it on a local TV show but I still wasn't happy with the lyrics. I've finally got around to writing the right lyrics for it and so deemed it worthy of recording.
Lyrics
He carries her broken heart and a picture of her in his mind Remembering when the good times then Brought such glorious times Dancing and dining out, traveling all about So much in love, blue sky above The future was never in doubt But this life has its way of turning the tables one day Feelings can change and lead us astray And then comes the hell to pay Many have taken those steps walking alone down Lovelorn Lane And many have often wept walking in grief down Lovelorn Lane She carries her broken heart and a picture of him in her mind Taken from her in the prime of their lives Sometimes this life's so unkind They carry their lonely hearts and make the most of their lives Never a soul-mate came their way I admire how they survive Many have taken those steps walking alone down Lovelorn Lane And many have often wept walking in grief down Lovelorn Lane And a few of them even leapt when reaching the end of Lovelorn Lane And now all what is left are the spirits and ghosts on Lovelorn Lane...
