Story behind the song
My father was a train driver through the great days of steam. He started off shovelling coal as a fireman before graduating to driver, eventually becoming an instructor, teaching new drivers. I've been wanting to write a song about him for a while, and this was triggered by an American train driver's remarks that I read about at a folk music website called The Mudcat Cafe.
