Story behind the song
How many of us die when a loved one dies?
Lyrics
GRIEF EXTENDS (BEYOND THE GRAVE) Down in some desolate land, Deep beneath the desert sand, I found a picture of you – Hard to believe, but it’s true. Lost in that forsaken place, I gazed long upon your face. Though the photo had decayed, My sweet memories don’t fade. I gently traced your faint smile, And for just a little while, I felt alive once again – Felt like I did way back then. When we danced atop the clouds, High above the teeming crowds. Like Icarus, you and I Wrote our names across the sky. Everyone was so amazed, Staring at the scene we blazed. Both our futures burned so bright, Brought the day into the night. Then the rare and heavy rains Washed away love’s last remains. Left me here to lie alone, In the shadow of this stone. All these visitors I see, Are they here for you or me? With plastic flowers in their hands, Silent, motionless they stand. With plastic flowers in their hands, Not one of them can understand. The act of dying cannot save; Grief extends beyond the grave. Such a somber group indeed, Come for you or me instead? Only one of us lies buried, But both of us are dead. Such a somber group indeed, Come for you or me instead? Only one of us lies buried, But both of us are dead. Copyright © 2014 Lex Zaleta
