Story behind the song
I met Len Valles when I was in 7th grade. He was five years older than I was and we both played a lot of guitar together. Later in life Len use to drink a lot. I thought he had a great country voice and use to sing all the old greats. Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb ect. He was Born in 1938 and crossed over in 2013. He always had his very own personal relational ship with the Lord. One time we were in the Nevada desert praying and talking about the Lord and I asked him what he do if he saw Jesus approaching us and holding out is whiskey bottle he said : " I'd offer him a drink.
Lyrics
I’ve tried to lay this bottle down
And smokes always
follow me a round
I’ve tried to quit
But some how I’ll never change
Some folks even think that I’m strange
But what do they know bout me
They never keep my company
I though last year
I reached my destiny
My heart struck at me
Trying to set me free
But lord had other plans for me
Another son he gave to me
I’m just your friend and I’ll never be
That high society, I won’t put you down
If you Like To clown around
O’l Willy would be so proud of me
You know I’d even cut his hair for free
I’m putting you on, I wear mine just as long
Some folks think I write all his songs
So hand me that there old guitar
I’ll lay my smokes up on the bar
I’ve tried to change but some how I’ll never quit
you can always count on me just the way that I am.
You can always count on me just the way that I am
