Story behind the song
While the original intent was humor, it's serious at the same time. Alcohol can be a slippery slope. I personally knew a guy who was brilliant by anyone's standards, literally made millions and retired in his forties. Sadly, despite his intelligence, he fell under the spell of the bottle and died of liver failure in his fifties.
Lyrics
Take A Sip
Words and Music Dan Edwards 2014
I’m just another middle aged American man,
And I’m just trying to do the best I can.
But there are times when it’s not so easy
Living in a world that feels so greasy.
And there are times when I feel it slip away,
I start to lose my grip,
And that’s when I…
Turn to the bottle and I take a sip.
Yeah, I take a sip.
And all my pain, it starts to melt away.
Oh Lord, I feel I’ve been saved.
But in reality I know I’ve really…
Been enslaved.
But still I take a sip.
Ten thousands of years… maybe more,
Since the first man unlocked the door,
To reality beyond compare,
Just behind the eyes of that lifeless stare.
So many men, and they have all been saved.
So many souls, and they’ve all been enslaved.
And still I take a sip.
Yeah I take a sip.
Me, I take a sip.
Sometimes two.
