Hip-hop beats from Team Westward are a culmination of years of studying the game, extensive music knowledge, and engineering sessions from P. Diddy to Mos Def.
There are no boundaries in the dynamic world of production. There are still so many sounds that have yet to be discovered, so many unsigned but talented artists just waiting for the right beat or production team, and there is so much evolution in sound that ups the ante on what is considered ground-breaking and fresh. This is where Team Westward finds its niche in the current landscape of production. Ironically, both Ariel Borujow and James Wipper graduated from the same school of hard knocks, the Institute of Audio Research (IAR) in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City. But they never crossed paths in their year studying at the school. It was coincidentally at NYC’s The Cutting Room where the two finally hooked up. They’d discuss their influences such as Rick Rubin, Dr. Dre, & DJ Premier, while setting up the studio during early hours. During the day they’d work on sessions together with the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Just Blaze, and Lil’ Moe, and after breaking down the studio at night, they’d talk about their goals to become producers. These discussions led to frequent experimentations, these experimentations led to intense beat making sessions. The two combined their skill to form a sound that brought out the strengths in what later became Team Westward. Ariel’s early studies with the guitar and the desire to pick up any type of instrument (Keys, Bass, Shakers, etc.) meshed well with James’s hard hitting drum beats, sense of arrangement, and distinctive sampling techniques. Team Westward have taken the "grass roots" approach to breaking out as producers. They have been working with and developing an assortment of hip-hop acts as of late; some notables being Kel Spencer (Will Smith writer), Budhite Knights (Prototype Entertainment rap group), City (Columbus, Ohio lyrical assassin), and the acts of E.O.W. (NYC's longest running hip-hop open mic). Team Westward also produced "White Soul (Partner In Crime)", the leadoff single for pop/rock artist Fred Niznik's new record, "The Renaissance LP". This is why the Westward Sound works. They are not only beat makers, they have the ability to work and write with the artist as well. Their influences range from classic rock, to dancehall, to even classical, to form an unexplored style that hip-hop has not yet seen. This unique fusion of sound from this young versatile production team can be described with only one wordWestward
