Story behind the song
The River Flows (Psalm 127:3-5) (Copyright 2003) Words and Music by David L. Jones This is another one of these tunes (the hook – chorus section) that came to me during the twilight of my sleep, just before I wake up. I call it “the twilight zone.” After a little work I was able to work it into a tune that I could dedicate to my dad, just thinking about all of the things he’s been through in his life – he’s from that “greatest generation” – born before World War II. After looking at the lyrics, and a little more crafting of the words, I was able to make it into a Father/Son relationship tune that I could also co-dedicate to my sons. Daniel 2:35 and 45 speak of the the stone that struck the image made of iron and bronze, etc. and then the stone became a great mountain. I think that is a reference to the Lord – at least that’s what I mean in the first verse.
Lyrics
The River Flows V.1 Down from this Great Mountain, first a trickle then a stream, comes a Mighty River flowing. On it all these things I’ve seen: I’ve seen waterfalls and rapids with the world on either side I’ve seen her troubled waters rising and her peaceful waters wide. And I promise to myself as I’m along for the ride Chorus I’m gonna rise with the sun I’m gonna stand in the rain I’m gonna try for love I’m gonna feel the pain I’ll take the higher road I’ll go where heaven knows where the River flows V.2 “Where’re you goin’, Mister?” said my boy with his bright eyes. “If you’d really like to know, son, come along.” I replied. So, we travelled down that River, went whereever we could go. He learned sometimes to make some headway you’ve got to go against the flow. And I promised to myself as I watched my child grow Chorus We’re gonna rise with the sun We’re gonna stand in the rain He’s gonna try for love And I’ll be there to soothe the pain We’ll take the higher road We’ll go where heaven knows where the River flows. V.3 “Where’re you goin’, Mister?” said the father to the son. “I need to test the River’s currents, where they begin and how they run.” as I watched him get aboard his craft and slowly drift away I look back at that Great Mountain and, remembering the day I made a promise to myself, and it was coming true today Chorus ‘cause I got up with the sun and I was standing in the rain I had given all my love and I was feeling all the pain But I took the higher road and I went where heaven knows where the River flows. He’ll take the higher road He’ll go where heaven knows where the River flows.
