Story behind the song
Hoebler started the composition of this song by introducing the chord progressions for the verses and the chorus, and the first two full lines of the lyrics. With these, the concept of the song was already defined in terms of its fullest potential concept. The band was just forming and was collaborating on various ideas in various audio- environments, such as basements, condos, and porches. After getting this song's concept, Rossi introduced the blues-oriented progression for the bridge. Having already assembled concepts for several songs together, the band had no reserves in allowing Pendulum to try continuation of the lyrics while using the song's structure that was already in place. When the band got back together a few days later, Pendulum introduced the remaining lyrics of the song, and offered a chord alteration for the guitar-solo section, which was supposed to make the bird sound like he's soaring a bit more. By then, the momentum of the overall collaboration allowed the progression for the solo section to come about as a natural variation. The song was then complete, though the musical arrangement style of the band was only beginning to find its potential. After a few months of diligent and fun rehearsals, this recording was started. A few lyrical edits and remixes were made since that time.
Lyrics
In the sky so blue . . . the small bird flew; Whether or not the wind blew . . . his course always true . . . He could see the sun in his eyes; And he could feel the aeroplanes going by; And he could hear whatever the clouds were saying, To explain to him the way back to his home (and to his heart). Chorus 1: The sun told him he should hold his course, of course: You can make it without remorse . . . you can: You can, if you only can (you can); You can, if you only want. In the garden field . . . the acorn grew . . . But what his love would yield . . . he always knew . . . But how did he get by, just tryin' to get high; Sucking in the sun, but he didn't know why . . . But he could always seem to see the way, Whenever he found the light of a new day. Chorus 2: The sun told us we should seek its voice; we can, We can touch it without a choice (we can): We can, if we only can (we can); We can, if we only want . . . We can take the course of another; We can leave some love with our brother; We can pull together if we have to; We can do what no single race can do. Chorus 3: We can, of course we can (we can). We can make it without a plan (we can). We can, if we only can (we can). We can, if we only want . . . [Solo Section] What a man 's to do . . . is what he wants to do, When all his lies are through . . . And his thoughts are true . . . When he wakes in the morning and his asks the sun If his motion towards it has begun . . . We can seek the light of another; But we can't escape love's gravity. Chorus 4: We can, of course we can (we can); We can, if we only can (we can); We can, of course we can (we can); We can, if we only want. Copyright 1996, Hoebler, Rossi, Pendulum
