Story behind the song
I wrote this whilst on holiday at Bawdsey in Suffolk (the seagulls were recorded on the beach). I was thinking how the river and the driftwood have no choice where they go and what happens to them. We may think we’re the same but We’re not... It’s in dropped D tuning, the verse hanging on a sort of D chord and the end of the verse running down from C to A chromatically.
Lyrics
Verse 1
From the mighty mountains in the west, where I was born,
To the eastern ocean where the sun greets each new dawn.
I run through the valleys and hills of countless lands,
Over the mud, the rocks and the golden sands.
Through twists and turns, and becks, tarns and burns,
The earth plans the journey for me, to the sea.
Verse 2
I'm a drifter on oceans and across the silver seas,
With the fish and the waves and the starlight for company.
From the Gulf Stream, to the ice caps and stranded on rocky shores,
In harbours and mangroves, and on to the northern fjords.
Through currents and storms, the sky cools and warms
The winds set the journey for me endlessly.
Verse 3
Now I could flow like the river to the sea,
Or sail the waves like driftwood endlessly.
I could put my hope in fate or destiny,
Or with faith seek out your purposes for me.
I'll walk in your ways, for all of my days,
For you're on the journey with me, eternally.
