He watched her from behind the wheel
As she walked on home from school
She's bundled up against the wind
As the autumn day grew cool
For a month he'd followed her
And the time was coming soon
Her world would turn upside down
On that Tuesday afternoon
"I'm a friend of mom and dad"
Said the soft voice of the man
"They told me I should bring you home"
She stepped up in the van
Nine years old and full of life
Freckled face and long red hair
And she never had a clue
On that day she disappeared
(chorus)
There's an evil flame
Burinin' in his soul
That he can't put out
And he can't control
He's done his best
To keep it hidden
The thought is bad
But the act's forbidden
Late that night, outside his house
Flashing light's and siren's wail
One thing that he told himself
He'd never go back to jail
Thoughts about those ugly days
Back at home when he was young
Asked the Lord to bless his soul
As he ate the barrel of his gun
(chorus)
Cause an evil flame
Burned inside his soul
That he couldn't put out
And he couldn't control
He had done his best
But he was driven
The thought was bad
But the act's forbidden
