I Can't Dance 'Cause I Didn't Wear My Boots

This is a little novelty tune. I can hear it being played live with audience participation and a twist at the end bringing in the girls with boots to sing a variations with some patter listing all of the dances that are possible for boot wearers.

Story behind the song
I was teaching a class for work at the Gaylord Opryland Conference Center (home of 650 AM WSM radio). One of the participants was describing what she and some other class members had done when they went into Nashville the night before. I asked, "So did you do some dancing?" The response was "I didn't have my boots." I told her that was going to become a song - which it did on the plane ride back to Buffalo.
Lyrics
I walked into a honky-tonk, the band was mighty hot. I drank a couple beers and tossed back a couple shots. The ladies looked so pretty and I thought I'd take a chance But this is what I heard when I asked a girl to dance. Refrain I can't dance 'cause I didn't wear my boots. These fancy shoes won't slip or scoot. I can't line, slide or two-step, 'Cause I didn't wear my boots. I waited for a while, then I thought I'd try again. Since the first girl turned me down, I thought I'd check her friend. We chatted for a minute, then I got the nerve to ask. But when I did she smiled and said "cowboy not so fast." Refrain I was thinking I'd move on but the music was so fine The dance floor had some room so I tried another time. I said I have a thought. You know to me it sounded sweet. Just take off those fancy shoes and dance in your barefeet. Instrumental She said, no way, you're not gettin' it. I'm surprised, it hasn't sunk in it yet. I'm just tryin' to be nice but it's true I didn't wear my boots. I've been turned down many times, you know it doesn't get me down. It happens more than half the time I make my way to town. I wasn't giving up. I still had the urge to swing. Just imagine my surprise when I heard all the ladies sing. We can't dance... Unpublished work (c) 2013 John R. Whitney
