Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
I wrote this the day after 'Stranded by the Tide' on Ngapali Beach, Burma... a rather different song though! When Dave Stacey came to visit from Florida, he said 'get a bass in and we'll have a jam'. I got a bass in and made him play on this track instead, which gave it a nice country soft-rock feel. I then visited Roger Brawn in Normandy and got him to play along with the rough version, recording it outdoors (listen out for the swallows) on his little Tascam and mixing it in when I got home.
Lyrics
D(2) G D When the wind’s coming at you like a drier at a hundred degrees G D And you’re feeling too lazy to look past the coconut trees A G Bm And if you could be bothered you’d wonder how the time has flown D A D It starts to get you thinking, maybe it’s time to go home Well now I’ve walked along the beach to the north and I’ve walked to the south You may say it’s beautiful well you’d take the very words from my mouth And those sunsets, oh you’d swap them for all that you own But when it all gets repetitious, maybe it’s time to go home A G D Beach life - ain’t all it’s cracked up to be Bm A G D I start to get bored with its soporifity A C D Beach life - It feels terrific for a day or so Bm A G D I know I’m far to speedy, I need to take things slow Bm A G A But if sweat makes my forehead beady then it’s getting time to go Well the waves look inviting as they come in rolling over the sand Just the kind of place to take a stroll with your love hand in hand And though the magic of the moment can still move you deep to your bones There’s a restlessness within that tells you it’s time to go home Instrumental verse & final chorus repeat verse 1 A G Bm It starts to get you thinking, maybe it’s time to go home D A D It starts to get you thinking, maybe it’s time to go home
