Story behind the song
Dave White (www.defaoiteguitars.com) built a guitar for the East Anglia guitar show....
Lyrics
Hickory, walnut and dock, is all I’ve got in stock It would be good to get more wood If Big Boy is going to rock I’ve got some wood, I’ve got some tools, I’m making a guitar I’ll use Bubinga for the sides and back Some European Spruce is what I’ll use to make the top With x-bracing to make sure it doesn’t crack Into the fox style bender go the sides to make the shape And then the hot pipe finishes the job Then drilling holes for buttress braces into the neck block And then some more holes for the tuning knobs There’s still a lot for me to do With wood and hot hide and fish glue This Big Boys going to sing when I am done I can still confound the earthlings With my curvy, arty purflings Yes, this Big Boy is surely going to stun The slot’s cut for the fingerboard the rosette channel’s routed The x-braces are radiused, notched then glued And next the top is voiced and, when I’m happy it gets signed Then trim the back and top to make sure they’re not skewed. I glue some wood together then to make the heel stack And shape them so they fit onto the edge Big Boy is taking shape now, and here’s a little trick He’s assymetric – I have built him with a wedge. There’s still a lot for me to do With wood and hot hide and fish glue This Big Boys going to sing when I am done I can still confound the earthlings With my curvy, arty purflings Yes, this Big Boy is surely going to stun The job is nearly done now as the neck is bolted on The fretboard cut and frets are slotted in The neck’s then carved until it’s really comfy for the hand And in the bridge I’ve made I’ll drill holes for the pins A final spray and polish to ensure he looks the part And to the headstock tuners I‘ll attach Then fit the strings and tune him up and do a final check to ensure that the design and outcome match The Big Boy is now ready for the East Anglia Show I hope commissions will come flooding in And as I’ve got some spare time I must fill to keep me sane I’m going to build a road trip mandolin
