Story behind the song
came about when my son told me recently that my barber (Joe) retired. I did not know this.
Lyrics
Ode To Joe (The Barbers) [28.03.2013] (V) A Joe was my barber when I was a young-in'. Back when I was a pup. He was a drinker, he was a smoker. Did both while he gave you a cut. The joke in my home town when I was a young-in. Had me shaking with fear. You'd count yourself lucky if after your haircut. If Joe hadn't snipped off an ear. (C) By the time I reached high school. Long hair was the fashion. That Joe he faded away. In between barbers had a cousin who cut hair. Which brings me to present day. (V) A Joe was my barber until he retired, this news just reached my ears. He'd been a staple for thirty odd years now. Place a sad face right here. That Joe never said much while he was cuttin'. 'Cept, “Short and square in the back.” An old town barber with chairs with ashtray’s and Playboys piled on a rack. (C) All through my adult hood. I'd go on occasion. At least a few a few times a year. This Joe had a way of makin' me relax. Shed tear right here. (V) My son had a barber, his name was Eli. Eli he passed away. A Joe's now his barber. My sons not dead Eli. Guess I'll go see him someday. Of this Joe I know nothin'. His manners his habit. Nothin' not one little bit. But I need a hair cut much sooner than later. So I guess I'll have to go sit. (Tag) And keep a Joe as a barber or quit. Copyright © 2013 by Douglas Murphy
