Story behind the song
As I was following media coverage of Cindy Sheehan's anti-war protests near President Bush's Crawford ranch, I began thinking of our propensity for forgetting about events once they have left the front page. I began writing "Nothing Happened Here." Ironically, I got sidetracked from finishing the song until the disastrous floods in New Orleans reminded me not to forget.
Good Without One recorded a ska version of this. DePotorLand has performed it ska-style and recently with a swing feel.
This slower acoustic version is close to my original version. I like playing it all three ways.
Lyrics
1
Used to be a river below;
They swam against the current every day.
Thought the dam they built was just for show;
Photos of the fish been thrown away.
CHORUS:
Only your imagination
Growing every year;
Your memories are open spaces;
Nothing happened here.
2
A thousand women whispered to the sky;
Voices in a state of disrepair.
Fast became the talk of passersby;
I swear I spoke with someone who was there.
CHORUS
3
Covered anything they couldn’t burn
With pieces that they found before it rained.
Left yesterday forgetting all they’d learned,
Washed away the dirt that still remained.
CHORUS
