Story behind the song
Based on Irish folklore. The Silkie are shapeshiftong seals that appear to be people when they come on land and remove their skins.
Lyrics
When the skies cracked open and angels fell Most followed Lucifer to Hell Some arrived on land and some dropped in the sea These are the faeries and the silkie Woman or man upon the land They rest themselves on shoreline sand There are none so dark and comely As the silkie that live in the sea There’s a man who lived in north Ireland Saw a dark tone woman on a rocky island As she slept in thesun he stole her skin Awake she had to follow and obey him He made her his own his dark prize wife Together they lived a happy life But she’d stand by the water and cry in the sea And long to return to the life of silkie They lived together for seven years Each night she wept seven tears Seven children she did bare The oldest was dark and six were fair The fisherman kept a secret chest In it he cached her natural dress One night she got her hand on the key Put on her skin and returned to the sea Back in the water, she swam with ease The man and six children were displeased The dark son, he ran into the bay And with his mother he swam away
