Story behind the song
The first track on pdq's debut album Every New Place, Long Grass is a sentimental song about finding strength while being alone. The song was originally recorded in 2002 with producer Terry Pulliam, who produced Sloan’s "Smeared", at SoundMarket Studio (Halifax), as a part of the three song demo, Beautiful Ones.
Lyrics
This beacon’s light is much too dim It trembles like a violin Upturned winds and rain that pours Sour tears just like before Abandoned in your wherewithal Engine turns while the driver stalls If I hold up within this tower Can I pass through my darkest hour Tempt me come on call me over Draw me out of my corner This sin can't be avoided I am unafraid Never sold my soul to the devil Though Ol’ Johnson told me so Never had to bargain my life away at the middle of the crossroads And if you want to find me I’ll be standing here alone With two feet firmly planted in the waist high wet snow The stars they dance out on this sea How can they all avoid me Life rafts come to save this ship My nails dig in and burst it This shell sounds like a thousand storms That trace the date when pride was born If I get burned will I believe The little smiles you're sending me
