Story behind the song
Rich came over and played me this song. He had been working on the lyrics for about a year but didn't really have the music yet completely worked out. I liked the lyrics for the most part but was instantly bored with the arrangement that he played me. I worked on the arrangement with him, suggested some lyric changes and he went back home and refined the lyrics and phrasing. He then sent me a rough vocal and guitar track to further map out the song (recorded late at night in his home studio in the lowest level he could muster lest wake up the family) I instantly loved the intimacy of the recording, warts and all, and tried to carefully add piano, bass, cello and backing vocals. If we never redo this one I will be quite happy although Rich contacted me today and is already working on a better recording. In the end it conveys an emotion and softness that I can relate to whether recorded perfectly or not. My only hope is, one, Rich doesn't kill me for letting everyone hear this version, and two, you all enjoy it for what it is...a beautiful,simple song.
