WHO IS IT? Gilbert Neal. WHAT IS THIS? Gilbert Neal’s new 2013 CD, “Dirty Red Pagan”. A CD funded in part by a successful Kickstarter campaign. WHAT’S THE MUSIC LIKE? It’s pop/soul. Fast numbers, slow ones, ballads, humor and true life stories. Sounds like Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan had a baby and made it listen to David Bowie and the Swingle Singers all its wretched but funky life. WHO’S PLAYING? Gilbert Neal on vocals, piano, guitar and bass. Steve Camilleri on drums, Darrelll Nutt on percussion, Marko Marisic on good guitar parts, and Pamela Henderson on backing vocals. WHAT’S A “DIRTY RED PAGAN”? An anagram of “Andy Partridge”. The great XTC front-man gave his enthusiastic blessing to use that as the CD’s title. It’s an apt one considering the somewhat socialist, somewhat sexual, and somewhat godless messages in the lyrics. WHO IS GILBERT NEAL? A multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He was born in Buffalo, NY and now lives in Hillsborough, NC. He has performed in many kinds of ensembles through the years. Jazz, theater, funk, 50’s, soul, prog, etc. This is his 4th complete solo work, the previous three being Drink The Beast With Me (2006), “Our Deepest Apathy” (2008) and Vultures and Diamonds (2010). DO YOU FORESEE A TIME WHEN LENNON-MCCARTNEY BECOMES AN ACTIVE SONGWRITING PARTNERSHIP AGAIN? No. WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION? Try gilbertneal.com. Also Facebook, etc. as well as videos on Youtube. If you must. WHAT’S THE DREAM? To be the American Susan Boyle.

Lyrics
It's Jamie day, summertime again, I’m glowing in her Zen, And what she gives me, my sing-song shadow play, she makes it blow away, Like dust in a ghost town, tearing the border down I'm standing on the corner, the traffic skips a beat, I cross with odd defiance, I conquer Cary Street, The magazines and posters, a local takes a seat, the Dead are on the radio searching for the beat, I navigate the colors, the menu and the pace, my cluster of possessions reserve our special space, I nod at the barista, Sumatra it must be, and wait for my symbiotic refugee, Our arms they swing together, Our arms they swing in time, Our hands are almost touching, And for the day she's mine, The sunlight dances for her, she dances in return, Her hair is gold and silky, and life is no concern, She knows me like no other, but chooses to remain, There's no need for an answer, there's not need to explain, I feel a breeze behind me, her laughter makes me strong, She's gliding past the strangers, I wonder if they know that it's… Caffeine crazy, we pour into the sun, Walk behind as the cliques become undone, By the street signs and the buskers, temporarily, Only to reform again beyond the reverie, She requests that I play that song but it's best when she sings along, People-watching from the windows of our brasserie, Traipsing through the vinyl shop, a common history, Does she need this? Like I do? Is there some truth there that's out of my reach? Need this like I do?
