Story behind the song
A friend of mine had a painful first marriage, then fell in love with the man she described as her soul-mate. He died in her arms a few years later, the end of a long and painful struggle. Years later she dreams of finding a message in a bottle, written by him. In it he told her to try to love again. She never really finished grieving over him, but she also never regretted having loved. It was the one of the most beautiful things she ever experienced in life.
Lyrics
And she walks alone along the river park.
No people out today; winter winds keep them away.
Such mixed feelings for a friendship she has made.
A secret's not a lie; there's no harm if I try.
She takes a sigh and breathes the winter air.
She sees him reaching out, but does he really care?
Her heart alight with passion that she longs to share,
But a chill wind burns her eyes and fears begin to rise.
Love is shallow or exuberant and brief.
Courage and belief just compound the grief.
Fantasy can't heal accumulated scars.
Being brave and smart will not heal a heart.
A biting wind stirs up and steals her breath away.
The sunset marks the end to an unfulfilling day.
She wonders if he thought of her somewhere along his way,
And if the setting sun still shines on the Wasatch Mountain skyline.
Years ago a bottle washed up on the sand,
A message penned to her, a familiar loving hand:
"Don't forget to love as fully as you can.
It will be hard to start, but it's part of who you are."
She knows that she could never love that way again.
A heart so fully broken doesn't ever really mend.
And love affairs are silly things; they ruin many friends.
But a soul-mate's such a find: if you're lucky once a lifetime.
