Story behind the song
This song is about a cowboy that was in love with a girl in Del Rio Texas but was wanted for shooting a Texas Ranger in Laredo, and while he was on the run she married his best friend, then when he came back she was still in love with him and wanted to meet him in Mexico. He did not want to betray his best friend so he let the rangers catch him.

name is Maria and I had to see her before I road in- to
old Mexico. when I found her she was in the cantino where
we fell in love so long ago. she said I am married to your
very best friend and you'l have to swallow your pride and
just go.
I left the cantino and went out where the horses were
tied. I went to climb in the saddle when I felt a tug on my
side. she took me by the hand and pulled me closer then she
whispered these words.

later in the evening as the sun set on the land I had to
cross that Texas border cause I'm a wanted man. I shot a
Texas Ranger down in Laredo town so I had to get to the
border and cross the Rio Grand.
I stoped at the border and climbed out of the saddle and
sat down to think of my sin, I was in love with Maria
but I couldn't betray my friend. My head was a spinning
and I was remembering these words.
