Story behind the song
This song is about Daddy. Daddy loved Bluegrass Music, he loved Bill Monroe and Kentucky. Dad had been in the hospital where Paula and I had stayed with him for several days. He wasn't getting much better, so we went home to take care of business before returning to get Daddy situated in a new environment. While we were home, Paula wrote this song. Little did we know she wrote the song just before Daddy died. Always take care of those you love.
Lyrics
HE THOUGHT HE COULD SEE KENTUCKY
FROM HIS ROOM IN WICHITA FALLS
HE THOUGHT HE COULD HEAR THE BLUEGRASS
AND HE COULD SMELL THE RAINDROPS FALL
HE TALKED ABOUT HOW AN EAGLE
COULD FLY WITH A BROKEN WING
TO BE SAFE ON A BLUERIDGE MOUNTAIN
WHEN THE WINTER TURNS TO SPRING.
KENTUCKY MOON TAKE CARE OF DADDY
IF HE GETS LOST ALONG THE WAY
KENTUCKY MOON WATCH OVER DADDY
‘CAUSE I WON’T BE WITH HIM TODAY.
HIS BOOTS ARE AT HIS BEDSIDE
AND THERE’S A LIGHT ON IN THE HALL
HE MIGHT TAKE A TRIP AT MIDNIGHT
OR WHEN THE MORNIN’ COMES TO CALL
HE’LL BE LOOKIN’ FOR A SMOKEY MOUNTAIN
OR A BLUE MOON SHININ’ BRIGHT
HE’LL BE LOOKIN’ FOR KENTUCKY
LIKE AN EAGLE LOST IN FLIGHT
CHORUS
