Story behind the song
Several years of work went into writing this, off and on. A full set of lyrics were eventually completed, then rejected. A bit of inspiration from Poe helped move it along. Also an image in my mind of watching a city from a distance, and seeing the lights go out one by one at the end of the world. This song has lots of deep meaning, using the idea of dance as a metaphor for other things. The phrase "...dancing a broken waltz" also has great connotations, even if I'm not sure what it really means. Buy the CD!
Lyrics
I feel the earth revolving, it’s turning even now but when I try to see you, I find I don’t know how The stars that march above are cold without our love A world that spins inside, the darkness they allow A goodbye takes a moment, but moments slip away sometimes when it happens, then we lose our chance to say A past that fades from sight we’re turned out in the night To dream what time has taken, a moment could delay And as the lights go out it’s all been said and done Before they fade to black we’ll watch them one by one A future once so shining, has cracked along its faults Our tears now just reminding, that we dance a broken waltz Let’s take one turn together, before the party clears I feel our bodies swaying, to the music of the spheres We spun so gracefully but now it’s all empty The laughter that we shared, still ringing in my ears And as the lights go out it’s all been said and done Before they fade to black we’ll watch them one by one A future once so shining, has cracked along its faults Our tears now just reminding, that we dance a broken waltz We twirl along the edge, and peer into the void before a final bow, we’re hoping to avoid I look into your eyes the music slowly dies The curtain has come down, the sets have been destroyed And as the lights go out it’s all been said and done Before they fade to black we’ll watch them one by one A future once so shining, has cracked along its faults Our tears now just reminding, that we dance a broken waltz We dance a broken waltz Yeah we dance a broken waltz
