Ah the 70s. Great tunes, shame about the clothes.

Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
This was written for the fabtastic Coconut Blues Club's November 70s challenge; it was only when I started thinking about it that I realised just how much of a complete 70s nutter I was. Seems to me that just about every musical genre that I love either came to prominence or actually originated in that 10 years. Heavy metal, prog, art-rock, punk, dub reggae, jazz fusion, power pop, the list goes on. What happened in the last 40 years? So I tried to do a sort of American Pie thing with cryptic references to the music that had the biggest effect on me. Quite tough trying to get them all in and even now there's a lot I had to leave out - unlike Don MacLean I don't have the stamina for 7 verses, and neither I suspect, gentle listener, do you. Anyway enough foaming at the mouth - see how many you can spot. Now, where did I put my bondage loon pants?
Lyrics
Well the sixties ended when Jimi died and the Fabs collapsed I can't remember if I cried Until Ozzy wailed On that darkest Sabbath day And the black knight set the white swan free But we're all right now 'cos the Trilogy Gave us pictures of the grave new world New World We danced the focussed foxtrot on black dog stairways We were fragile, a little too close to the edge But you know, you know the Mahavishnu Drew locomotive breath And then the Lamb lay down in the Lamia's pool While the Giant was gently playing the fool And Freddy was the killer In a rhapsody of death (on two legs) The seventies were the best decade The best decade The best decade The best ten years of our miserable wasted lives Yeah The seventies were the best decade The best decade The best decade The best ten years of our miserable wasted lives And then John Peel turned the New Rose up And we we were jamming in the city with the blitzkrieg bop While Jimmy and the Jet Boys kept the Frozen Ones Under complete control Now Natty, lively up yourself Cos Ziggy's laying low for a spell And this year's model, well She was an American girl From Wuthering Heights to the Wishing Well, The long winding road to the highway to Hell They'll never be outdated But I wanna be sedated! The seventies were the best decade The best decade The best decade The best ten years of our miserable wasted lives From Wuthering Heights to the Wishing Well, The long winding road to the highway to Hell They'll never be outdated But I wanna be sedated!

Like Mike says, you're a hit machine and this tune brings me such a mix of memories of those brit punk and new wave bands like The Jam, 999, The Members, Tom Robinson Band, Squeeze, oh so many. Great guitars and killer beat topped by your stunning vocals. So brilliant. Make a record, i'll buy it !

A great rocker full of power and awsome vocals! Great job on this one Seth.
An amazing song, Steve. Your super vocal and guitars really captured the wild and wonderful sounds of the '70s. I can see The Smivets in hot concert with your crazy garb... and hair...and all of the rest of the best of an unforgettable era in music. Thanks for the memories and the dl of this brilliant song in lyrics and vocal/instrumental recording.
Clever lyrics and a great tribute to one of the most loved/hated of decades.

How do you do it? You're a hit machine, 70's or otherwise. You've undoubtedly developed a knack for pushing out these melody-laden gems with integrity. Signature and absolutely brilliant, hold that final vox note a little longer next time, LOL....Love it!
