Originally a popular eighteenth century English drinking song 'The Anacreontic Song', then a nineteenth-century American patriotic song to the lyrics of Francis Scott Key's 'The Defence of Fort McHenry', the tune was finally adopted as the National Anthem of the United States of America in 1931.
