Story behind the song
We ride by a national cemetery on the way to my home in Old Hickory, Tennessee. One morning at sunrise, Peggy woke up and said through tears that the crosses were calling to her everytime we rode by and we wrote this song in a few minutes and both of us wept. We hope the world community is as moved by the song as we were writing it. Recorded live at Gene Breeden's studio, Nashville, Tennessee.
Lyrics
The Cross We Bear By Peggy Mercer and John Richards (c) BMI 2012 V1 On these hills row after row white as the fallen snow. They built bridges we now walk on and bear the burden of the cross. V2 We go down freedom road with our own heavy loads. Till the past circles again to this gathering of friends. Chorus: Beautiful rolling hills where we come to remember them... They died not in vain. And they'll wear someday crowns made from Calvary here... that's the cross we bear.... . musical instrumental repeat Chorus Tag out: And they'll wear someday crowns made from Calvary there. that's the cross we bear.
