We’ve gone through our savings but we’ve lost every bet.
There’s an old man standing next to me
he closes his eyes and says “this used to be easy.”

And women come home...and count what they made:
the ladders they climbed...the children they saved.
Sunfall is quickening, the old men are waiting
watching the planes as they cross the black river.
Our bags are packed and the car engine’s running
