Story behind the song
this song is about mass effect. for me, it serves to bridge the gap between mass effect 2 and mass effect 3. it was written in 2011.
the opening riff is based on a bridge riff from tandem (protest the hero), but transposed to the tonic key of the piece and used as an opening theme. its ok.
the second riff is another tapping riff, with a very kinda gothic feel. in classical music, specifically opera, its really common to introduce characters or themes by tying them to specific musical ideas/passages. if the first passage represents commander shepard desperately attempting to warn the galaxy of impending doom, then this second riff represents the reapers themselves, ancient sentient machines drifting through the abyss of deep space, a solid and real threat, distant, but getting closer every day.
the third riff is meant to represent the world under assault, it arrives suddenly and abruptly and is the real manifestation of the threat foreshadowed in the first two passages.
the 4th riff/musical idea is probably the sickest riff i've ever written. this is the touchdown riff, the reapers have landed, and they're hunting down humans left and right. perhaps goes on a bit too long to be effective.
the 5th idea is meant to be a sort of intermission, representing commander shepard leaving earth, or something. i'm not really sure what it means at this point. this riff is still a bit rough, the track actually cuts off early due to an export error, but there is quite a bit more planned. originally there was an additional section, which featured human-abstract style chromatic/whole-tone riffage, but was more of a rough idea than anything solid.
the preceding and following movements are both piano/synth sections, the first movement an introduction, the third movement an airy continuation of the piece, perhaps exploring the idea of an human trapped inside a reaper or something, i don't know. this project is kinda on hold until certain things happen. the forth movement is completely f*** ed, but that's a different story.
