Done as a songwriting exercise. Topic A was to write about fathers (around Fathers Day) or family relationships. Topic B was to include a key change in the song.
Family relationships aren't always good. I've known a few like this.
Lyrics
verse:
You never took an interest
In things that I thought mattered.
Maybe that's why your sons never left
And your daughters scattered.
verse:
It seemed like your were stuck with
Someone you didn't love.
And it was my bad luck
Who I reminded you of.
chorus:
All I've ever wanted was to know that you cared.
To ask me how I've been and where.
verse:
I call you every weekend
To see if you're okay.
You mention a few aches and pains
And the details of your days.
verse:
I wait for you to ask me
What's happening in my life.
We listen to each other breathe
And then we say good-bye.
verse:
You never say you love me.
Or ask me how I've been.
And there's no point in mentioning
Our resentments and regrets.
