Story behind the song
This has been rattling round my head for a few years in several incarnations - short story, novella, epic poem as well as this song...
Lyrics
By the fifth day of the blizzard there was no way out of town All the water pipes were solid all the power lines were down All the phones and televisions were as silent as a tomb Not a single human signal entered to ... the frozen womb There were snowmen in the gardens there were snowgirls in the park There were snowcats in the alleys but the snowdogs didn’t bark And the blizzard never faltered there was snow on every breeze Making snowboys in the playgrounds and snowbirds … in the trees. When the end of the world came to Shropshire When Gordon Perry met himself he thought it was a prank Some kids had made him out of snow - right outside the bank Amazed at all the effort made to capture him in life He turned and met the snow twin of Gordon … Perry’s wife He found Gordon Perry’s children, he found Mrs Barrett’s dog All fashioned from the crystals falling from the freezing fog And rising in his fear he stamped on one of Kenny’s hens But when he looked that icebird was entirely … formed again When the end of the world came to Shropshire The first to slip away was Annie Baxter’s oldest cat Already he was sickly and the cold took care of that He died on Annie’s lap, her bony hand upon his head And a snowcat in his image went and hid … behind her shed. John Morrison had been hoping he could climb over the snow That banked up fifty feet where New Street used to go And as people burned their tables in their struggle not to die John Morrison the snowman found a fire … inside his eye When the end of the world came to Shropshire As the freezing and starvation took their toll upon the town The dead were simply left outside upon the frozen ground But for every mortal passing as the fearful days played out An icy crystal creature came to life … and looked about John Morrison the snowman met with Gordon Perry’s wife He thought she looked much nicer than she had in real life And Annie Baxter’s cat was chasing one of Kenny’s hens Delighted to be able just to run … and jump again When the end of the world came to Shropshire. There were prayers and much repentance but the weather stayed the same There were fires built as signals but no rescue ever came All worshippers and heathens faced the same and certain hell Every consciousness would transfer to a cold and icy shell > When the end of the world came to Shropshire. Soon the warmbloods were outnumbered and the icefolk grew more bold Every statue brought to life was coldly welcomed to the fold Many humans took the choice to fall asleep beside their twin To wait until the rapture of the moment they… were born again. After thirty days of blizzard there was no town left to see And the snow had reached the steeple and had buried every tree The icefolk needed nothing to sustain them in their lives Just a few degrees of frost and tiny fires… inside their eyes. When the end of the world came to Shropshire. x2
