Lyrics
Water ‘neath the Bridge Wouldn’t take no sage to see That it’s floodin’ down there And the current’s choked with flotsam All of my days pass by In a dark and muddy stream Once considered so fondly Purchased and loaded with such sympathy But now I scorn them as they pass me by In the water ‘neath the Bridge Water ‘neath the Bridge That forms an ocean With no shoreline to be seen And this span reaches the horizons From east to west Across this deep and wine-dark sea Once a valley of badlands A desert homestead where I passed my days But now I search for it in vain Through this water ‘neath the Bridge These waters blushed* and growing scarlet These waters cleansing from the depths to the crest Yes, there’s power in the Headspring That ain’t just water ‘neath the Bridge Water ‘neath the Bridge The flow is constant And the source will never cease And as I stand upon this Bridge I’m daily casting off The jetsam that would cling I may not be a wise man But I know I don’t deserve this place to stand Yet I’m grateful just to stand here Gazing at that water ‘neath the Bridge *Originally this was “flushed,” but, when associated with water, there is an alternative meaning that I wasn’t going for. However, I also like the association “blush” with “scandal,” rather than “flush” and “exertion.” Thoughts?
