Story behind the song
September 11th 2001....New York city's World Trade Centre complex destroyed as two hijacked airliners are flown into both the North and South towers, almost three years ago and yet that statement still somehow feels unreal. As someone who lives in Scotland in the UK and has never even set foot on American soil, it was to become somewhat of a surprise to me as to how strongly I felt about the events that occurred on the morning of 9/11. As i recollect it, I arrived home from work to find my entire family gathered around the tv watching the events unfold, not long after I had arrived home the first tower collapsed and shortly after as we know, the second tower followed it to the ground. I'm watching it with my own eyes and yet it seems like i'm watching some Hollywood B movie - too unreal to be believable. Anyway, as darkness fell over New York and the realisation of the enormity began to sink in I couldnt move from my tv as reporter after reporter took eye witness accounts from almost anybody they could. As the night wore on a pretty female reporter began to interview a young man who had rushed down to ground zero as had many relatives of the missing or unaccounted. He had two photographs in his hand one of his father and the other of his brother, both had been missing since the collapses and he couldn't make contact with either. As the young man began to tell his story and explain his worries and concerns for his loved ones, the reporter interrupted him to confirm that it had started to rain. The young man began again holding the photos up for the cameras as if someone could help him with a lead in his search. The most incredible thing about this mans words was the manner in which he spoke. Although he was terribly concerned, he spoke with an air of belief that he would soon be reunited with his father and brother. His words were indeed very touching and as I began to feel tears well in my eyes. The reporters voice actually cracked with emotion as she tried to ask the man how realistic his hopes were of finding them safe and sound. There was a brief silence as she tried to compose herself and carry on the interview. In that moment the man added, and i quote " I'll tell you this...they have knocked this city on its ass tonight. but tomorrow we will awaken with a smile again, cos they'll never knock the smile of this city's face. We'll be back bigger and stronger." The reporter turned to the camera and ended the interview. It was then I picked up my pen and some paper and began to write the lyrics that were to become this song. It was probably the fastest set of lyrics I have ever written . It had all been said, it just needed to be put down on paper. A few days later I sang it for Ken and he quickly grasped where i was coming from and set about writing the music which now accompany the lyrics and what a great job he has done. We tried a few different tempo's and arrangements but always seemed to come back to the arrangement we have now - it just feels right. When i first had to sing this song it was quite difficult as it is so emotive and I found the best way for me to sing it was to try and approach it from a different perspective which is this - when i sing this song i dont focus any more on the tragedy of what happenned but rather that I have realised I am not on this earth for too long and that I should make the most of my time here. Lets forget the petty indifferences that can plague all of our lives and that I aim to set out to be a better person and if everybody could do that wouldn't the world be a better place? As a father and husband I am not ashamed to wish for a better tomorrow. I never did find out if the young man found his father and brother safe and well but I would like to think that he did and thats enough for me. This song was written for the people of New York and I do hope that there are some New Yorkers out there who will get to listen to this tribute to their
Lyrics
Here am I, an ocean away Asking why A million tears are falling like rain From the sky There's nothing left but broken stones Nothing more than shattered homes Their lives have changed forever And all I feel is a rage inside CHORUS I remember your smile I remember your touch I remember the day You kissed me under a Manhattan skyline I remember so much I remember your words I remember you promised Sorrow can never steal your smile Stolen life, September morning Frozen in time Photographs picture a memory Of you in my life Close my eyes I won't fear tomorrow Hold on tight I know now that you watch over me Every night. There's nothing left but broken stones Nothing more than shattered homes Their lives have changed forever And all I feel is a rage inside CHORUS
