Story behind the song
One of my many jobs over the years(and my "professional" background) is in Social Work. This was written while I was working with residents and families in a Nursing Home in St. Louis. You had these old blue collar people who had thrived for the last 80 years. . .surviving the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, Everything that followed. . .all with the stoic, positive attitude common with 2nd and 3rd generation Americans. This song tells the story of a wife who has had to watch one of these heroes that she has loved for decades decline into dotage. Alzheimers Disease is a terrible thing, for both the individual and the family. . .no two ways about it. Please support your local Alzheimer's association.
Lyrics
Charlie I met you on a summer’s day When we were young, many years ago I loved you from that moment. . . I knew what only lover’s know That I’d live out all my days with you We’d be together every day Now 60 years have come and gone And you’ve left me here to stay The years were mostly kind it seemed Until the darkness fell on you You were my rock so many years Oh now what can I do? The doors of your mind slowly closed The windows darkened one by one These golden years are nothing but The setting of the sun. Charlie will you know me When we stand there face to face? When the fog is lifted and we meet again Will it be like it was then? My raven hair has turned to gray My skin is paper thin Will you still love me when we’re young again When this world has passed away? Your eves are dull your voice is gone You sit and stare for hours on end Our children grown and gone away We’ve buried all our friends What a bitter cup you’ve left for me. . . To sit and watch you waste away I can only pray when the end has come That I’ll follow you that day Charlie will you know me When we stand there face to face? When the fog is lifted and we meet again Will it be like it was then? My raven hair has turned to gray My skin is paper thin Will you still love me when we’re young again When this world has passed away? Charlie will you know me When we stand there face to face? When the fog is lifted and we meet again Will it be like it was then? My raven hair has turned to gray My skin is paper thin Will you still love me when we’re young again When this world has passed away?
